Where Is Senior Project®?. Some schools have earned Senior Project® Certification.

1. Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont
  • RI requires SP®/Capstone for all and their Diploma System has an Exhibition Toolkit A-Z with valuable Resources & Tools. North Providence is a Senior Project® Certified Program. The Education Alliance at Brown University.
  • Connecticut's CSDE considers its Capstone Project A Key Component of Secondary School Reform (powerpoint).
  • Massachusetts has MassCore - College and Career Readiness supporting CP. It has a Senior Project® Certified school with an excellent website, Cape Cod Tech in Harwich and
  • New Hampshire's Bow and Souhegan High Schools have solid programs.
  • Vermont's Department of Education High Schools on the Move: Secondary School Initiatives Matrix (2006) lists 11 schools with Capstones. Randolph Union HS was "the first" CP developed in New England. Rutland Region Education Alliance Capstone Project has produced valuable documents, including Irasburg Elementary School's Eighth Grade Career Challenge Project. Blue Mountain offers both 8th grade and senior year exit projects.

2. District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania
  • Pennsylvania requires SP®/Capstone for all students. Outstanding programs at Fairfield Area with Ms. Debra Flinchbaugh; Haverford, Sayre.
  • Maryland is currently considering requiring SP® or Capstone program. Under their Bridge Plan, students who have passed all of their other requirements could pass the HSA by completing a rigorous Academic Validation project.
  • New York's Warwick Valley Central School District has a program, as well as Spencerport Schools.
  • Re-Designing Education in New Jersey for the 21st Century, New Jersey's High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) supports the writing process.
    Camden's MetEast High School had a year of no-dropouts, where everyone did a senior project.

3. Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Wisconsin
  • Ohio requires SP® or Capstone programs for all students. Dublin Scioto has a good program.
  • Indiana's Columbus East is Senior Project® Certified, with School Library Media webpage support.
  • Wisconsin's Senior Project® Certified West Salem has Nicole Ellefson-Johnson.
  • Minnesota's St. Paul Johnson High School has a program of note.
  • Illinois' New Trier piloted in SP in 1992.
  • Michigan's Merit Curriculum (MMC) established some of the most ambitious core graduation requirements in the nation, including ELA and Senior Project coursework.
  • Iowa Learns Council 2 considered SP as one of 9 reform models.

4. Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia
  • North Carolina has required all students to complete a NC Graduation Project - "a derivative of the SP® program." They have four Certified programs: Eugene Ashley HS (Joann Absi, Media Coordinator), New Hanover HS, Laney HS, and Hoggard HS. The SERVE Center at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro has successfully managed the U. S. Department of Education-funded Southeast Regional Educational Laboratory (REL-SE) for nearly two decades, including early Senior Project promotion.
  • Virginia and West Virginia have considered adoption statewide. Outstanding Virginia programs are at Wakefield High in Arlington and First Colonial High in Virginia Beach.
  • West Virginia State Law, Eff. Class of 2012: "It is recommended that students complete a senior project to add rigor and relevance to the senior year." Shady Spring has a noted program, while Marion County's policy was protested at East Fairmont High School.

5. Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi
  • Louisiana State SP Advisory Council is currently considering SP® as a requirement; Senior Project is one of the academic diploma endorsements approved by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE). Five districts require it: Beauregard, DeSoto, St. Charles, St. Tammany, and Vernon.
  • Florida has two Certified Senior Project® schools: Auburndale, and West Shore Jr/Sr High School in Melbourne. Other programs of note have been built at Oviedo and Gulf High School.
  • Georgia has two Certified Senior Project® schools: Columbus with an outstanding Honor Code and Council, and Wheeler High in Marietta. GaDOE's MS Curriculum Coordinator presented in 2010 at GACTE on Investing in Middle School Capstone Project for 8th grade Students.
  • Mississippi's Certified Senior Project® school is Stone High in Wiggins

6. Arkansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas
  • Senior Project® Certified Program, Alice High's Dr. Linda Zamarripa
  • Arkansas has Drew Central High School with Rhea LaGrone

7. Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Utah
  • CA has strong ACRL leadership; many schools and districts requiring Senior Project® or Capstone programs.
  • Hawaii has several schools with longstanding programs, Molokai (Diane Mokuau, incoming HASL President), Lahainaluna, etc.

8. Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Washington
  • Has 2 states (ID/WA) which Require Senior Project®/Capstone for all students.
  • Task Force from WLMA, a state with one of the longest histories in the US on the issue of SP as a Grad Requirement. Michelle Simms created
  • Senior Project Center/P4DL in OR. Portland Jewish Academy touts an 8th Grade Capstone Project.
  • Idaho's State Department of Education will be working with their districts to obtain examples and templates of Senior Projects to post on the Department's Web site so other school districts can use these examples when developing their own Senior Project requirements. Wood River and Jerome have quality samples.
9. Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming
  • South Dakota is currently considering requiring SP®/Capstone programs. Their Governor's 2010 Education Initiative Goals and Initiatives include "Create Senior Project models," with interesting powerpoints.
